The global resurgence of bed bugs (the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius L, and the tropical bed bug, Cimex hemipterus F.), and the associated social, economic and human health impacts, has been well documented. While there is no evidence that bed bugs are involved in the transmission of any disease-causing pathogens, cutaneous reactions resulting from their bite can be extremely irritating. The risk of exposure of travellers to bed bugs is being reported more commonly but, unlike vector-borne disease, there is a paucity of evidence on personal protection measures.
