摘要

Whole blood donation deprives donors of a considerable amount of iron. To protect the donor's health, the iron status of blood donors is indirectly assessed before donation, most commonly by measuring hemoglobin (Hb) levels. Donors with relatively low Hb levels, which in many cases does not yet indicate anemia, are deferred from donation to prevent them from developing true iron-deficiency anemia after a donation. In addition, deferral of donors with low Hb levels guarantees that blood units for transfusion meet the required standards for Hb content.
