Public policy, blood safety and haemovigilance.

In this edition of Transfusion Medicine, editorials focus on two topics recently considered by the Department of Health Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs or SaBTO. SaBTO advises the Department of Health in London and the respective Departments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on the most appropriate ways to ensure the safety of blood, cells including stem cells, tissues and organs. It is a wide ranging and important role not only for policy in the UK but also its decisions and deliberations often influence opinion further afield in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
