Blood transfusion in Bangladesh with particular emphasis on the treatment of Thalassemia patients

Bangladesh is a country of Southeast Asia, bordered by the Republic of India on the north, west and east, and by Myanmar to the Southeast. One of the most densely populated countries in the world, the total area of Bangladesh is 1,47,570 square kilometers with a population of more than 160 million.Independence day of the country is 26th March, 1971. After independence, the blood transfusion service was not so developed as other fields of medical science. But the scenario has changed since then. In 1972, the Father of the Nation Banghabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Central Blood Transfusion Centre at the Institute of Post-Graduate Medicine & Research (IPGM&R) which is now Banghabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University (BSMMU). At the same time a Post-Graduate course named DBS&T was introduced in IPGM&R, Dhaka, Bangladesh [1].
