As an educator and self-confessed tire nerd, I never pass on an opportunity to blow something up or crash a vehicle in the interests of training. When my viewers see the mannequin blown to shreds by the air after a zipper rupture, they'll think twice about standing next to a restraining device while a tire is being inflated. My goal was to inform technicians of the risks associated with that practice and with the help of Michelin, I assembled a team that made it happen. In 2009, the chance to document the consequences of replacing two tires and installing them on the drive axle of a front-wheel-drive vehicle came up. This time it was Bridgestone that stepped up and offered their wet traction test facility for the filming. We found some used tires in town for one of their vehicles, installed them on the back, and let the spinning commence. The footage is the definitive evidence that this practice is dangerous and often leads to the loss of control.
