The effect of cured leaf extract of bidi tobacco cv. Gujarat Tobacco 5 (GT) on growth and development of bidi tobacco cv. Anand 119 (A 119), root-knot disease @ 21 per sq.m at an interval of 15 days, two or three times, either with 1 or 10 % concentrations, significantly increased number of transplantable and total surviving seedlings over control and also reduced root-knot disease. The population of reniform, root-knot and stunt nematodes was also drastically reduced at seeding and thereafter till 68 DAS due to the treatments. Root-knot (Meloidogyne inognita and M. javanica), stunt (Tylenchorhynchus vulgaris) neatodes are found associated with bidi tobacco in nursery and field. Nematicidal effects of extracts of various types of tobacco on nematodes are reported by many workers. (Miller et al, 1973; Krishnamurthy and Murthy, 1990; Singh et al., 1991). However, information on effect of tobacco extracts on root-knot disease and growth and development of crop plants is lacking. Hence, present experiment was carried out at Bidi Tobacco Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand to study the effect of cured leaf extract of bidi tobacco cv. Gujarat Tobacco 5 (GT 5, a high nicotine cultivar) on nematodes, root-knot disease and growth and development of bidi tobacco cv. Anand 119 (A 119).
