Addressing the need to ensure that substation equipment is in a fully operational state, electric utilities employ various techniques to monitor the status of control components. In recent years, so-called "smart" digital relays have been replacing the older-style relays that have induction discs with "normally open" and "normally closed" contacts to effect control when a fault occurs on the system.
