摘要

A key goal of translational medicine is to deliver novel technologies to improve the detection and management of specific diseases. There is an obvious cost and time-saving advantage if a single type of technology is diverse in its application to assist in the early intervention of a disease, the monitoring of disease progression, the prediction of prognosis, or the evaluation of novel therapeutics. Furthermore, in addition to being cost-effective, a technology is more likely to be adopted for routine clinical use if it is high throughput, noninvasive at the point of care, requires minimal training to operate, and does not rely on reagents for sample processing. It is because these requirements can be met by vibrational spectroscopy approaches that variations on infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy have been developed and proposed as portable point-of-care technologies.
