The mechanical properties of permanent mold cast Bi/Se-modified yellow brass, SeBiLOY III(C89550), were studied in detail. The alloy was prepared with 20 different compositions using the Design Expert, and tensile properties were evaluated. The effect of various alloying elements, such as Zn, Sn, Ni and Bi, was analyzed. The permanent mold cast ISO test bars were prone to centerline shrinkage which reduced the ductility. In general, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) increased and percent elongation (%E) decreased with increasing zinc contents. However, Bi also played an important role in determining the mechanical properties. At a particular zinc content, the %E was higher when the bismuth content was low and vice versa. Bismuth, however, had a beneficial effect on UTS and YS. This paper recommends the nominal composition, minimum and typical mechanical properties for SeBiLOY III.
