Total oxygen levels in induction furnace melted irons—a preliminary report

The AFS 8C Coreless Furnace Committee has undertaken a study of oxygen levels in core less melted irons. There will be three parts covered: a broad sampling of at least 20 foundries to establish base line numbers; more specific tests looking at the whys and hows of oxygen pickup; then a test to see if oxygen levels can be more readily controlled. This paper relates the results of the first phase of the study, looking at O{sub}2 levels in gray, ductile and malleable iron shops melting with line-frequency and medium-frequency furnaces.
