Literature review suggests that improvement in silicon recovery and decreased oxidation loss can be obtained by judicious use of the silicon charged and subsequent silicon additions during acid cupola melting of cast irons. The concepts involvedare examined by the authors in this report.A data base from a ductile base iron cupola melting system accumulated over a six-year period was available. Quantitative relationships in equation form of Si-charged, holding vessel silicon and oxidation loss were developed from the data.Beyond about 25% Si loss, a significant increase in silicon charge requirements was observed. Silica content of slags was found directly related to Si oxidation loss and Si charge parameters, and was predictable by Equations and material balancecalculations. The potential for Si recovery improvement was observed, but not tested.
