Determining silicate slag structure is critical to the understanding of the mechanisms associated with the removal of boron from silicon. Silicate melts are described by the extent of oxygen bridging, therefore, understanding the effect different oxides have on modifying the silicate structure will provide valuable information regarding the rate limiting processes involved in boron mass transport. Samples ranging from 40-60% SiO_2 were evaluated with differing concentrations of CaO. Samples were quenched to a glassy state and modifications to the silicate network associated with the additions calcium oxide was analyzed utilizing Raman spectroscopy.
