The past decade has produced the most fascinating evolution of marine electronics. I still recall debating the virtues of the fishfinder as recently as ten or so years ago. Back then it was not uncommon to see fishing boats heading out to sea withoutfishfinders! Yet today I doubt you'd find a single serious fishing boat without such a device. Back in 2000 I made a trip up the north coast of NSW, visiting a large number of fishing groups and clubs. I spent a week taking quick fishing trips with theseorganisations out of their home ports. In fact over that week I made six different fishing trips from six different locations. Only two boats I travelled on at that time had a GPS aboard. I remember clearly debating with these very keen fishing club enthusiasts, arguing that they should consider a GPS as a natural part of their boating fit out. Just six years on and I bet if I made that same trip, every boat would have that GPS on board.
