Prepn. of a cinnamate ester (I) by the reaction of CO, O2 and its corresp. styrene cpd. and alcohol comprises conducting the reaction in the presence of a catalyst contg. (a) a platinum gp. metal or cpd., (b) a copper or iron cpd. and (c) a cpd. of at least one metal selected from gps. 4A, 5A, 7A, 8A (the iron gp. only), 1B (exclusive of copper) and 2B. Pref. catalyst components include (a) palladium chloride, palladium acetate and bis(acetylacetonate) palladium, (b) copper acetate and copper acetylacetonate and (c) V, Mn, Co, Ni or Zn cpd. Pref. a halogen cpd. is also included.
