Whether for traffic counting, incident detection, or freeway management the migration toward above-ground technologies shows no sign of abating. Here and now, it is all about sensors - devices to detect or measure a physical property and record, indicate, or otherwise respond to a particular event. They're are a part of our everyday lives, from the device that opens hotel doors to the hand-held police radar speedgun. The traffic technology sector is increasingly calling upon this particular aspect of science. The sensing arena itself is diverse and includes electronic eyes for visual scanning to the application of impacts, sound waves, the determination of temperatures and wetness of roads to that of remote sensing using satellites. In the future, such technology could become ultra-accurate, and GPS systems such as Galileo could be used for ATMS technologies such as speed detection and road user charging, and even applications such as speed limitation in specific locations.
