Vietnam to Strengthen Tobacco Control Regulations

Vietnam consumes approximately 90-96 billion sticks of cigarettes a year, of which 72 to 80 billion sticks are made by the domestic industry for a population of 90 million people. Nobody knows exactly how many more illicit cigarettes (smuggled, counterfeit, fake) are floating around the market. Vietnam Tobacco Association estimates the illicit trade to account for 21-22% of the total volume. Vinataba, the central state-owned tobacco company, the largest in the country, accounts for about 40% of the market share: the rest is manufactured by various other smaller enterprises and foreign tobacco companies in partnership with the national industry.
