摘要

The vinyl ester of neodecanoic acid (Figure 1), also called vinyl versatate (W), possesses a unique, apolar tertiary substituted a-carbon structure and is an ideal co-monomer for vinyl acetate-based emulsions. The absence of an acidic hydrogen atom on the a-carbon, combined with its bulky alkyl structure, protects the ester, making the vinyl versatate monomer resistant to degradation in alkaline conditions. Moreover, the vinyl versatate monomer contains a high number of carbon and hydrogen atoms that contribute to the hydrophobicity of the molecule. The hydrophobic nature of the monomer is best illustrated by its relatively low water solubility compared to e.g. vinyl acetate (Table 1).
