New hybrid inorganic polymers based on aqueous aluminosiiicate chemistry are excellent candidates for fire resistant coatings. The aluminosiiicate polymers can cure to form an inherently fire resistant inorganic coating. Hybridization with a small amount of organic additives enhances the properties of both liquid resin and cured coating without compromising fire protection. This paper presents results from experimental aluminosiiicate coatings on different pine substrates and their performance against the bushfire resistant timber requirements in Australian Standard 3959-2009. Accelerated weathering assessments to modified ASTM D2898 method B are being conducted to determine exposed coated timber bushfire resistance. Current single application hybrid inorganic polymer coatings at around 300μm are shown to pass the protected timber bushfire resistant requirements of AS 3959-2009 and can be used on internal structural timber.
