When samples are analysed with elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) there are common limitations due to properties of the sample or the experimental set-up. Typical problems originate from the decomposition or the roughness of the sample, from the resolution that can be achieved with the detector system or from the accuracy of the ion stopping power values. Nevertheless, there are different experimental and evaluation techniques that can be applied to avoid such problems or to deal with measurements of difficult samples. The detection system can be improved by dedicated evaluation procedures. Different strategies are currently used to improve the examination of ERDA spectra and the validity of the results obtained.
