To study the regulatory effect of octreotide on the level of zinc, copper, chromium, manganese and serum amylase, sample analyzing was carried out in the present study. 30 male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: the SAP (severe acute pancreatitis) group (n = 10), octreotide-treated group (n = 10), and the control group (n = 10). Severe acute pancreatitis was induced by injection of sodium taurocholate into the pancreatic duct. Concentrations of serum zinc, copper, chromium and manganese elements and serum amylase activity were measured 6, 12 and 24 h, respectively, after the infusion of sodium taurocholate. Lapa-rotomy was then performed and histological evaluation of the pancreas was done under light microscopy. The level of amylase in SAP group was higher than that in the other groups according to the result. After the rats were treated with octreotide (1 ml: 0.1 mg), the level of amylase in the serum decreased significantly (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the findings of the hystopathological analysis also confirmed the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. The results of sample analyzing show that the level of zinc, copper, chromium and manganese in SAP group was lower than that in the control group. However, the level began to rise again after the rats were treated with octreotide. The findings suggest that altered mineral metabolism in serum and octreotide may get involved in the recovery of severe acute pancreatitis. Correction of abnormal metabolism of metal ions may be the minor mechanism of somatostatin analogues in treatment of SAP.
