Stable plasma magnesium status in essential hypertensive patients treated with angiotension II antagonists (follow-up investigation)

Changes in Mg~(++) handling seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of primary hypertension. Some antihy-pertensive drugs (e.g. some diuretics) can additionally decrease plasma or intracellular Mg~(++) stores. In this context the role of the new antihyper-tensive angiotensin II antagonists has not been studied in detail yet. In the study presented here, 60 essential hypertensive patients were monotreated with angiotensin II antagonists (epro-sartan, irbesartab, lorsatan, valsartan, candesartan). In each patient, plasma Mg~(++) concentrations were studied before and after therapy. The results showed no significant difference in plasma Mg~(++) concentrations in essential hypertensives before and under a 4- to 6-weeks monotherapy with various angiotension II antagonists. In a follow-up investigation, after about 3 years in 20 of these essential hypertensive patients treated with various angiotension II antagonists, plasma magnesium status was still in the normal range. In conclusion our results show that antihypertensive treatment with various angiotension II antagonists is safe and does not disturb magnesium metabolism in man in long term treatment.
