The aerosol of PM10 solution was instilled to SD mouse lung. The sterile physiological saline was used as control. One month later, all mice were killed. Each mouse was lavaged by physiological saline. The biochemical indexes, for instance, contents of some metal-binding proteins, number of cells and cell types, bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) were determined. The histopathology of lung tissue was also studied and the elemental distributions were analyzed by scanning proton microprobe (SPM). The PM10 instilled mouse lungs showed measurable inflammation. The contents of metal-binding protein (albumin etc.) in BALF were significantly higher than those of controls whereas their Ca, Zn contents in tissues were significantly lower than those of controls. Fe content of PM10 instilled mice were significantly higher than those of controls. The reasons for the change of element contents are discussed.
