REACH - mounting concerns for the surface finishing industry

The introduction of the REACH legislation in Europe was a positive step to take control of an area that has little control over how we evaluate the dangers and problems facing society from the long term effects of much of the modern man-made chemistry available to us today. Some of the implications to the surface finishing industry have previously been spelt out. Unfortunately compliance as we understand it at present has made it very difficult for the long established processes that much of modern society depends on today and there is a significant danger that the implementation will cripple much of the small scale industry that supports our way of life. There is a danger that the efforts and costs associated with introducing very laudable controls will force many companies out of business without the legislators realising the effects before too much damage is done.
