News that took most of the industry's observers and participants completely by surprise broke at 07:30 EST/12:30 GMT on 21 February 2017, when Tronox Ltd. (headquartered in Stamford, CT) announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire the TiO2 business of Cristal (a.k.a. the National Titanium Dioxide Co. Ltd., headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). The acquisition will be implemented by payment of $US 1.673 billion cash plus the issue to Cristal of Class A ordinary shares in Tronox, representing 24% of the equity in the "new Tronox."
