NORWAY & SENEGAL: TiZir Takes Over the Tyssedal Ilmenite Smelter

The Tyssedal ilmenite smelter was built on a site that had previously been occupied by a State-owned aluminium smelter and it inherited contracts for very cheap, long-term power supplies (at that time less than $US 20 per MWh). Establishment of the ilmenite smelter was driven by the desire of the Gro Harlem Bruntland Government to maximise the value-added content of Norway's primary exports.
