International Paper waiting for OK on TDF test-burn

TICONDEROGA, N. Y.—International Paper Co. is at odds with the state of Vermont over its plan to test-burn tire-derived fuel (TDF) at its plant in Ticonderoga and is awaiting a permit from the state of New York. The paper manufacturer had received a draft permit from the New York Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for a two-week trial burn of TDF at Ticonderoga. However, Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, along with a grassroots organization called People for Less Pollution, insists that burning TDF will cause unacceptably high levels of toxic pollutants to drift across Lake Champlain and foul Vermont's air.
