Canmaking companies in India must now use tinplate certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The notification for compulsory BIS certification was issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs in September 2008 and became effective from the 12~(th) February 2009. Under the directive, tinplate is one of the steel products that must conform to specified standards in order to be made, sold, stored or distributed in India. Non-BIS certified tinplate lying as inventories and in-transit will have to be scrapped. From now on, global tinplate producers, such as Corus and ArcelorMittal, will have to pay an annual marking and processing fee, which will increase their overall cost by 2 percent. This in turn will be passed on to the Indian tinplate importers.
