Influence of sow vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae on the protection of piglets through vaccination

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the vaccination of sows and/or piglets with Stellamune Mycoplasma (Two-Shot) and Stellamune One (One-Shot, Pfizer) against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae on the performance of the piglets. 254 sows and 423 piglets were divided into 5 treatment groups: group I - vaccinated sows/one-shot-vaccinated piglets; group II - vaccinated sows/two-shot-vaccinated piglets; group III - non-vaccinated sows/one-shot-vaccinated piglets; group IV - non-vaccinated sows/two-shot-vaccinated piglets; and group V - vaccinated sowson-vaccinated piglets. Blood samples from sows were taken 3 weeks before birth, on the day of birth and 3 weeks after birth, from piglets on days one, 21, 63 and 140 and tested for antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae. The daily weight increase was calculated until day 105. After slaughter, the lungs were evaluated. At the age of 20 weeks, insignificant differences in humoral immune response were found in all groups of vaccinated piglets, and piglets of the unvaccinated group V had significantly lower values. All vaccinated piglets showed significantly better lung scores than piglets of the unvaccinated group. A significant difference was also found between the groups with one-shot-vaccinated piglets. Piglets of non-vaccinated sows displayed a significantly better lung score. Up to day 105, insignificant differences were observed in the average daily weight gain between pigs in all groups. The different vaccination schemes did not influence the body weight until the pre-fattening period. Antibody titres of one-week-old piglets showed that sow vaccination was capable of inducing a high concentration of maternal antibodies in the piglet. However, no effect on daily weight gain or the lung score was observed. All pigs in vaccinated groups displayed better lung scores than animals of the unvaccinated control group. Vaccination pattern had no influence on the daily weight gain until day 105. In this herd, the vaccination of piglets with the above mentioned vaccines improved pulmonary health.
