An overview of the possible causes of swelling in the lower jaw of horses, like mandibular fracture and dental diseases, is presented in this article. In addition, five cases of this disease complex treated at the equine clinic of the Freie Universitat Berlin in the last ten years, are reviewed. Aside from clinical examination, radiography and endoscopic exploration of the oral cavity provide the most information for the diagnosis of this disease..
