ARISE works to eliminate child labour in the areas in Malawi, Brazil, Zambia and Tanzania where JTI has direct contracts with farmers. Why is this project so important to JTI?This project is key to what we do. It is key to sustainability. We don't do it because we have to do it or it's nice to do it. We do it because if we don't, then we cannot procure the right quality of tobacco at the right price long into the future. It is not sustainable to have children put at risk in order to grow tobacco. We need to make sure that in the areas where we buy tobacco, children are protected and have access to education and good healthcare. That's sustainability. We can protect tobacco growing into the future by nurturing an understanding of quality that allows a farmer to make a living and grow tobacco again. He becomes more responsible and that makes us a better business. It's good for business.
