Eastern Europe remains a smoking culture compared to western Europe, containing major markets with the world's highest smoking prevalence. Smoking per capita in the eastern Europe region is the highest in the world but a change in smoking habits is under way. Over the last five years 2006-11 five countries in the region, including the biggest tobacco market, Russia, saw a rise in smoking population.
