Due to an intensive growth and development of newborn animals, not only the concentration of metabolites and biocatalysts, but also the serum enzyme activity during the suckling period have a wider range than the referent values reported in the literature for pigs. The objective of this study was to compare the enzyme activity in the serum of two piglet groups: a group with a small birth mass and a group with a normal birth mass, related to their growth. The serum analysis was carried out on the 7th and 14th day of life. In the seven-day-old piglets, a higher activity of alanine aminotransferase (p<0,01) was determined in the group with a small birth mass. Within the group of piglets with a small birth mass, a significantly lower activity of alkaline phosphate (p<0,01) was determined on the 14th day of life related to the value on the 7th day. In the serum of the piglets with a normal birth mass, on the 14th day, a statistically higher activity was determined for alanine aminotransferase (p<0,01) and lactate dehydrogenase (p<0,05), and a significantly lower activity of alkaline phosphatase (p<0,01) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (p<0,05) related to the value on the 7th day.
