Investigations on morbidity and mortality in dog pups of Beagle breed kept under different raising conditions.

345 Beagle pups from 60 litters kept in a large dog breeding unit had a mortality rate of 8.7% with 83.3% pup losses during the first week of age. 19.4% of the 345 pups showed disease symptoms at 20 days of age. 10.9% pups born in whelping boxes with gel pad showed disease symptoms, while the number of sick pups raised in whelping boxes with plastic grid and litter material (wood shavings) was two times higher (28.1%, P<0.01). It was observed that there was a high significant relationship between morbidity and mortality. The mortality rates of healthy and sick litter pups were 4.9 and 23.9%, respectively.
