Effects and indications regarding use of an immunomodulator (Bay-pamun (R)) in farm animals [German]

The stimulation of endogenous, non-antigen-related defense mechanisms by parapoxvirus-based immunomodulators opens up new possibilities for the control of infectious diseases in domestic animals. Several in vitro and in vivo studies, as well as controlled clinical trials and studies underfield conditions, have shown the efficacy in target animals such as cattle, pigs, dogs, cats, and horses. Prophylactic and metaphylactic treatments with immunomodulators significantly reduced the incidence of infections in stressful situations such as crowding. Although costs for medical paramunization are discussed critically, treatment shows evident advantages: immunomodulators are,for example, effective after only a few hours while vaccines need several days before they become protective. Furthermore, they do not lead to problematic drug residues as do antibiotics. Besides, the application of an immunomodulator can be recommended for the treatment of multifactorial diseases where conventional therapies often fail.
