For a typical off-the-road (OTR) tire, sheer physical strength is needed to deal with the abuse encountered in mining, agricultural, and forestry applications, and extreme weight-bearing is sometimes required - the largest earthmovers routinely carry single loads of more than 400 tons. As a result, OTR tires need to contain a higher proportion of the stronger, more durable, but costlier, natural rubber than their highway counterparts. Tougher internal components come as standard, including substantial textile and steel tire cords and belts, steel bead, and carbon black pigment reinforcement.
