Effect of undernutrition on the distribution of progesterone in the uterus of ewes during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle.

40 ewes were synchronized using progestogen pessaries. At pessary withdrawal, the ewes were fed diets to provide 1.5 or 0.5 times the daily maintenance requirement (groups H and L respectively). L ewes had higher peripheral progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase of the 1st cycle after pessary withdrawal and during days 5-10 of the next cycle than H ewes (P<0.05). However, endometrial venous progesterone content on day 5 of the cycle, but not day 10, was higher in H than in L ewes (P<0.05). Treatment had no effect on progesterone content in ovarian venous samples. Progesterone concentration in endometrial and ovarian blood samples collected ipsilateral to ovaries bearing a corpus luteum was higher than in the contralateral samples (P<0.001).
