In the UK during the summer, the dominant ambient energy flow interacting with a building is solar energy from sunlight; in the winter, wind is dominant. For maximum year-round renewable energy provision, both solar and wind energy should ideally be converted into energy for the building. The extraction of solar energy by the building or by building components is fairly well established technically, even if not widely deployed (apart from a few countries around the world) either by solar collectors for hot water provision or by passive solar building design.
