Students are often unaware of how the vast amount of data they rely on for information and entertainment reaches them. They are frequently amazed to learn that light, not electrical current, is the carrier of much of this data. A discussion and demonstration of the principles of lightwave communications provides an engaging way of introducing students not only to the use of light as a means of transmitting information, but to the physics behind some optoelectronic devices such as lasers and solar cells.
