摘要

The feasibility of coherent lightwave communication systems is studied from the viewpoint of device and system considerations and expected performance. The results confirm earlier observations that coherent optical communication systems decrease bit error rate.; Constituent devices and technology for several coherent modulation schemes are studied by modeling and simulation. Eye pattern results on Intersymbol Interference (ISI), and jitter are obtained. The figure of merit is the Bit Error Rate (BER).; A large signal circuit model of an InGaAsP laser operating at a wavelength of 1.3(mu) m is developed. Limitations due to mode partition noise are studied. It is shown by using the Dolph-Chebyshev technique that phase-locked injection laser arrays can operate in a single longitudinal mode. Proper equalization is needed to mitigate the effects of signal distortion and ISI. It is shown that this can be accomplished with an optimal Intermediate Frequency (IF) filter.
