Bacteria are ubiquitous in our world. From our homes, to our work environment, to our own bodies, bacteria are the omnipresent although often unobserved companions to human life. Physi-cists are typically untroubled professionally by thepresence of these bacteria, as their study usually fallssafely outside the realm of our typical domain. In thelast 10 years, however, several events have occurredthat demand the attention of the general populace— including the ranks of physicists among them.
