Canine borreliosis: Are we facing the facts?

The Lyme disease pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto is one of a group of pathogenic spirochaetes (B. burgdorferi sensu lato) that are all transmitted by ticks. Whereas in North America B. burgdorferi sensu stricto is the only pathogen responsible for human disease, in Europe other Borrelia spp. have been identified as causes of clinical disease in human beings. Whether these European strains induce canine disease is still unclear ( Krupka and Straubinger, 2010).
