Aspergillosis: Something more than an Aspergillus fumigatus question

Until the 1980s, it seemed to be clear that the main fungus involved in aspergillosis in veterinary species was Aspergillus fumigatus, except in disseminated processes in dogs, where A. terreus was considered to be the responsible agent. At that time, an increasing number of studies were reported in which different aspergilli were identified as the cause of disease, including A. deflectus, A. flavus and A. flavipes, as well as members of other fungal genera, such as Acremonium, Penicillium and Paecilomyces spp. For this reason, a number of years ago we proposed that these cases should not be called ‘aspergilloses’, but instead described as systemic or disseminated mycoses, at least until the causative agent was reliably identified ( [Garcia and Blanco, 2000] and [Blanco and Garcia, 2010]).
