摘要

This paper examines the implications of conservation attitudes of the Hehe people for sustainable heritage management. The rationale for this study is to understand the role of local communities in heritage management. Most states in Africa are blamed for disregarding the roles of local communities in the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage sites. This has contributed significantly to a diminished community spirit and moral support among local people in facilitating effective heritage management and conservation. Local people believe that they have been neglected by heritage legislation that ignores local custodians who wish to enhance their own cultural history. This has led to a continuing mistrust among stakeholders, both local communities and heritage agencies. This paper also reveals that people are willing and committed to engage in conservation and heritage practices if their interests in resource use and cultural understanding are recognised by policy makers.
