SURGERY IN THE DIABETIC PET

In diabetic dogs and cats, surgical procedures are no more common than those occurring in the general pet population. This differs remarkedly from diabetic humans who have a high incidence of certain surgical disorders mainly due to the high frequency of microangiopathies and macroangiopathies.(8) The major surgical disorders include coronary artery occlusion, peripheral vascular disease and gangrene, and retinopathy. The picture in humans is further complicated by certain coexisting factors, including arteriosclerosis, hypertension ''silent'' cardiac disease, borderline renal function, and cerebrovascular disease.(8)
