摘要

The neonatal foal is born with minimal energy stores as compared with the adult horse. The body composition of the newborn foal differs significantly from that of the adult horse, and these differences contribute to the foal's inability to survive periods of nutritional deprivation. The total body water of newborn full-term foals is approximately 79% of body weight as compared with that of adult horses (60%) [1]. Premature mature foals have an even greater percentage of body weight in the form of water (83%) [1]. These differences are attributable to less body fat and greater blood volume in the neonatal foal as compared with the adult. The blood volume of the newborn foal has been reported to be 93 to 150 mL/kg [2]. Over the first 30 days of life, increase in body weight exceeds increase in blood volume, such that by 100 days, the proportion of body weight to blood volume approaches that of the adult [2].
