Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in the Republic of Korea in 2003/04.

This article describes an outbreak (19 cases; 10 chickens and 9 ducks) of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 strain (HPAI) in Korea Republic from December 2003 to 20 March 2004. Control measures included depopulation, restriction of movement of the birds and disinfection of the infected farms. Suspected cases led to quarantine and disinfection, while confirmed cases involved the slaughter of all the birds in the infected farms. Abattoirs and hatcheries linked epidemiologically to the disease were closed. 14 of the cases were reported by the farmers.
