Feline demodicosis caused by concurrent infestation with Demodex cati and an unnamed species of mite.

A case of feline demodicosis caused by Demodex cati and another unnamed mite species in association with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Mycoplasma haemofelis infection was reported. A male, neutered, domestic short-hair cat was presented for evaluation of an anaemia concurrent to FIV infection. It was heavily infested with fleas and showed intense generalized pruritus. After treatment with fipronil, the fleas disappeared, but the pruritus persisted. Routine PCR testing revealed the presence of FIV DNA. A large number of demodectic mites was found in deep skin scrapings from affected areas. Skin biopsy specimens revealed chronic hyperplastic, partially ulcerative dermatitis with numerous intrafollicular Demodex spp. mites. PCR for M. haemofelis was positive. M. haemofelis infection was treated with 5 mg/kg doxycycline administered orally every 12 h. Demodicosis was treated with 300 micro g/kg ivermectin administered orally every 24 h. Skin scrapings after 2 months of ivermectin therapy still showed the presence of numerous mites. The cat was euthanized at the owner's request. Microscopic examination of deep skin scrapings showed that 2 mite species were present. Some could be identified as D. cati, whereas most could not be classified.
