摘要

The direct-selling industry finds its reputation on the line again as Herbalife Ltd. faces allegations from activist investor William Ackman that its business model is a "pyramid scheme." Ackman, founder and CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management, is short-selling Los Angeles-based Herbalife's stock, essentially betting that the company will fail. Meanwhile, in disputing Ackman's claims, Herbalife executives have won the confidence of other investors who have now taken a stake in the multi-level marketing firm. Hedge fund Third Point acquired 8.24% of Herbalife Jan. 9, while Carl Icahn, another activist investor, has reportedly purchased a small stake in the firm as well.
