Proposed legislation to update the nearly 40-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act would provide the Environmental Protection Agency with broader authority to assess the safety of chemicals used in commerce. Introduced May 22, the Chemical Safety Improvement Act of 2013 (S.1009) would require safety evaluations for all active chemicals currently registered with EPA, and the agency would designate those as "high" or "low" priority chemicals based on risk to human health and the environment.
