Imagine being shown Ian amazing turbojet engine about the size of a 55 gallon drum, and finding out that it provides nearly 9,000lb of thrust and weighs a mere 450lbs! Of course the only way to make such a 20:1 thrust-to-weight miracle is by combining modern materials like titanium wheels and blades, and resin-filled high strength fibre composites, with the challenging technology of a counter-rotating shaft that is designed to eliminate vane sections and engine torque. Then, imagine finding out that this is not a current special programme test article, but that there were two such engines (and spares), - already in existence - one each in the UK and US - and that they were jointly designed built, tested and run by a collaborative team from Derby and Indianapolis... in 1968!!.
